The Missouri River has been a great early spring option. Fish are active and feeding consistently, and the river continues to produce good numbers if you focus on the small bugs it’s known for. Both nymphing and dry flies are worth keeping in the game right now.
Late morning through the afternoon has been the most productive stretch. Mornings can start slow until the sun has been on the water for a bit. Once the day warms slightly, fish begin feeding more regularly through the longer runs and slower flats.
Nymphing is the primary approach. zebra midges, sow bugs, and pink scuds have been producing the most fish. A sow bug or scud up top with a small zebra midge below has been a reliable setup. Fish them deep and steady through the longer runs. If you’re not occasionally ticking bottom, add weight before changing flies.
Dry fly fishing has been showing up on calm afternoons. When midges start collecting on the surface, fish will rise steadily in the softer water. Griffith’s gnats, black midge adults, and small midge clusters in the 18–22 range will cover most situations.
Streamer fishing can move a fish if you want to change things up. Thin mints, small sparkle minnows, and leech patterns fished slowly through deeper runs are the best bet.
Overall the Missouri River continues to be one of the more reliable places to fish right now. Focus on small bugs, fish deep early in the day, and keep an eye out for afternoon risers.
