The Missouri River is very low for this time of year, but fishing has been solid.
PMDs continue to drive a lot of the action, with caddis becoming more important every day. There are fish looking up throughout much of the afternoon, and anglers willing to hunt for risers are finding some very good dry fly fishing.
Most anglers are still starting their day nymphing before switching to dries once the bugs get going. PMD nymphs, sowbugs, frenchies, spanish bullets, and small pheasant tail variations have all been productive. Lighter nymph rigs and longer leaders have generally been outproducing heavier setups.
The dry fly fishing has been the reason to be on the Missouri lately. PMDs are bringing fish to the surface consistently, and caddis activity has continued to improve. Having a dedicated dry fly rod rigged and ready has been worth it.
Streamer fishing has taken a back seat to the hatch activity, but there are still a few fish willing to eat smaller baitfish patterns during lower light periods.
The Missouri is doing what most anglers hope it will do this time of year. Good bug activity, fish rising throughout the day, and enough consistency that anglers can pick how they want to fish rather than feeling forced into one method.
