Still very cold around Craig Montana this week but we have some “warmer” days in the middle of the week. If you're willing to battle the chilly conditions the Missouri River is still a great winter option. Not much for dry fly activity with the cold temps but nymphing is still hot.
Anglers have been doing well with a Scud or Sowbug followed by a small Midge nymph. Worms will also work throughout the winter. Focus your nymphing on the slow inside bends and buckets. This time of year can also be good for swinging some small leeches and soft hackles.
Once things warm back up again keep an eye out for fish rising to Midges on a warm afternoon.
Our staff recommends late April through early June as the best time of the year for a guided fly fish trip to the Missouri River near Craig, Montana.
